The Federal Government’s AI Strategy: Reflections and Implications for Privacy and Other Legislative Reform

Canada’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, entitled "AI for All", was released by the Federal government on June 4, 2026. This publication follows Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada's public engagement "sprint" in October 2025, which gathered input from both AI Task Force members and the general public.

Join us for our next Monthly Privacy Call on July 17, where we will reflect on Pillar 1 of the AI Strategy, "Protecting Canadians and safeguarding our democracy", as well as privacy considerations arising from Pillar 4, “Building the Canadian sovereign AI foundation”. In particular, we will explore the implications of the government's legislative and policy reform commitments, including:

  • re-introducing modernized consumer privacy legislation, which will include provisions to enshrine privacy as a fundamental right, prioritize children's privacy, and strengthen individuals' data subject rights;
  • re-introducing online safety legislation "to protect Canadians in the digital age"; and
  • implementing mechanisms to "protect elections and democratic institutions" from AI-enabled threats and interference.
