The lacking privacy framework for Canadian political parties: A roundtable discussion
With its newly established majority status, the Federal Liberal government is expected to introduce an updated private sector privacy statute to replace PIPEDA in the coming months. The new framework, like the proposed Consumer Privacy Protection Act that died on the order paper in January 2025, is expected to create robust statutory requirements for the protection of personal information in the private sector and to be accompanied by a severe enforcement regime for non-compliance.
The Federal government has also commenced wide-ranging consultation processes to support its review and modernization of the federal public sector Privacy Act, promising to engage interdisciplinary experts and stakeholders about a variety of themes and policy approaches.
A gap remains – a robust statutory framework to protect the personal information of Canadians in the custody and control of Canadian federal political parties.
Join us for a roundtable discussion on April 29, where we will explore the impact of recent and in-progress amendments to the Canada Elections Act, including Bill C-4 and Bill C-25, that have codified an incomplete personal information protection framework for political parties. The conversation will consider these developments in the context of the regulatory and judicial trend towards applying private sector privacy legislation to political parties.
Adam Kardash will moderate the panel discussion, featuring insights from:
-
Colin Bennett, Professor Emeritus, University of Victoria; Associate Fellow, Center for Global Studies
- Michael Geist, Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-Commerce Law, University of Ottawa
