De-identification and Anonymization Developments: Reflections on the OPC's investigation into the use of de-identified mobility data during the COVID-19 pandemic

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) recently issued an important decision related to de-identification and anonymization, following its investigation into the collection and use of de-identified network mobility data by the Public Health Authority of Canada (PHAC) as part of the federal government's COVID-19 response strategy.  

In this month's webinar, Adam Kardash was joined by:

  • Rosario Cartagena, Special Counsel, Privacy and Data Management Group at Osler and Chief Privacy and Legal Officer/Corporate Secretary at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES);
  • Khaled El Emam, Canada Research Chair in Medical AI, University of Ottawa and Co-founder and CEO of Replica Analytics; and
  • Pam Snively, Chief Data & Trust Officer at TELUS Communications.

Their discussion focused on key aspects of the OPC's decision relating to the effective approach to de-identification and anonymization, as well as other relevant regulatory expectations and evolving standards.
