BC and Quebec Privacy Law Reform Developments
In addition to major Canadian privacy law reforms happening federally, the B.C. Legislative Assembly has appointed a Special Committee to review its Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). According to section 59 of PIPA, a Special Committee must periodically conduct a comprehensive review of PIPA and submit a report regarding the legislation to the Legislative Assembly within one year of the Special Committee’s appointment. For more information, see the Special Committee’s webpage on the website of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia.
In related news, Quebec’s Minister of Justice is expected to table a new bill in the coming weeks that will revamp Quebec’s Act respecting the Protection of Personal Information in the Private Sector. The Minister has publicly promised a stronger law with more bite, “GDPR-style”. We will continue to monitor developments and follow up with news as soon as the Bill is tabled.
